The "One Belt-One Road" initiative, also known as the “Belt and Road” was proposed by the Chinese government in 2013 and includes the New Silk Road Economic Belt, which connects the country to Europe through Central Asia, largely following the communication network of the ancient Silk Road, and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, which links China to regions from Indonesia in the east to the coast of Africa in the west by means of naval routes in the Indian ocean and some of the Western Pacific.
